When fillings break down and pull away from the tooth, bacterium is ably to form new cavities under the old filling. If left untreated the root of the tooth will be destroyed and a root canal will need to be preformed. This is another reason keeping your recare appointments are so important. It's more than likely that if you feel pain it's to late. Dr.Neville meticulously checks each restoration for deterioration during his recare exams. Appointments are made to replace failing fillings at that point.

Sometimes, extensive tooth decay around an old filling may leave little tooth structure after decay has been removed. When this occurs, a crown, onlay or inlay maybe necessary.
